Wildlife
KI’s wildlife is its strongest card. You will see kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and koalas without trying. The four destinations below are where you go for the moments that justify the ferry fare.
Seal Bay is the only place in Australia where you can walk on the sand with a wild Australian sea lion colony. The guided beach tour is the must-do. Book ahead.
Admirals Arch sits at the south-west tip in Flinders Chase. The boardwalk drops down to a sea-cliff cavern with long-nosed fur seals on the rocks below. Best at low tide, best in seal pup season (October to December).
Hanson Bay Sanctuary is the easiest place to actually see koalas in the wild. Self-guided koala walk along a creek line. Limited daily numbers, book before you go.
Raptor Domain runs flying displays with eagles, owls and barn owls. The best 45 minutes you will spend on a kid’s trip, and worth it on an adult trip too.
Beaches
KI has hundreds of beaches and you will not see most of them. Three are non-negotiable.
Stokes Bay is the hidden one. You park, walk through a rock tunnel between boulders, and come out at a sheltered swim beach that 90% of day-tour itineraries skip. The car-park scene gives no hint of what is on the other side.
Vivonne Bay is a 6 km arc of clean sand on the south coast. Surf at the western end, calm water at the river mouth. Best beach for a long walk with the dog.
Pennington Bay is the local surf beach. Open to the Southern Ocean, strong rips, but on a still morning it is the most photogenic stretch on the island.
Adventure
KI’s adventure menu sits between the wildlife and the food. Three names cover most of it.
Little Sahara is a 70-metre wave of white gypsum sand in the middle of the island. Sandboarding, toboggans and the only walk-up dune climb on the island that is worth it.
Kayaking on the Harriet River covers the on-water side. Two distinct products: a 110-minute Guided Kayak Tour ($97 pp) and self-guided Kayak Hire (up to 3 hours, $77 double / $47 single).
Kelly Hill Caves are the underground option. Limestone caves with guided tours through the main chamber, and longer adventure-caving options for fitter guests.
Food and producers
KI punches above its weight on the food trail. The honey, the oysters, the distillery and the cheese are the big four, and you can string them into a day without rushing.
KI Spirits in Cygnet River does a small-batch gin tasting that holds its own against any mainland distillery. Walk-in or book a flight.
KI Oyster Farm at American River runs farm tours where you pull oysters straight off the rack. Limited daily numbers, book ahead.
Kangaroo Island Brewery and a handful of farm gates fill out the day if you have the time. The farmers’ market in Penneshaw on the first and third Saturday of the month is worth planning around.
