Stay

Where to stay on Kangaroo Island, the short list.

KI is bigger than people think. 155 km from end to end. Where you stay decides what you can actually see. Here is how to think about it before you book.

The three bases to choose from

Almost every stay on the island falls into one of three areas. Pick the one that matches your trip, not the other way round.

Kingscote is the biggest town. Walkable foreshore, the most restaurants, a supermarket, the Aurora Ozone on the headland, and a 45-minute drive to either end of the island. It is the safest bet for first-timers and the easiest base for 3-night trips.

Penneshaw sits on the east coast right next to the ferry terminal. The local dolphin pod cruises past most mornings. Best for short trips where you do not want to drive far on your first or last day, and best for anyone who wants to wake up overlooking the water.

The west end (Western River, Karatta, Vivonne Bay, and the edge of Flinders Chase) is where you stay if wildlife and the south-west coast are the whole point of the trip. Less infrastructure, more kangaroos in the driveway. Expect a grocery run before you arrive.

By budget

Three tiers cover almost everything on the island. Prices below are indicative and move with the season.

Full picks for each tier sit on the luxury, mid-range and budget pages.

Splitting your stay

5-plus day trips almost always work better with two bases. Two nights in the east near Kingscote or Penneshaw, then 2 to 3 nights closer to Flinders Chase, cuts a lot of dead driving. You see Seal Bay, the dunes, and the south coast without the 2-hour round trips back to your room every night.

Under 3 nights, pick one base. Moving rooms eats half a day, and you will resent the time more than you saved on the drive.

Booking tips locals share

Peak summer (December to February) sells out the best beds 4 to 6 months out. Easter is the next-fastest weekend to disappear. School holidays in April, July and October fill faster than they used to.

For shoulder season (March to May, September to November), most places have flexible cancellation up to 7 days out. Book early, lock in the rate, and re-check 2 weeks before in case anything drops.

Check what is included. Some lodges fold breakfast and a 4WD wildlife drive into the rate, and the headline price reads expensive until you tally the extras you would have paid for anyway.

FAQ

Common questions

Where is the best place to stay on Kangaroo Island? +
It depends on what you want to see. Kingscote is central, walkable, and has the most restaurants. Penneshaw is best if you only have 2 nights and want short ferry transfers. The Flinders Chase / Western River end is for people who want wildlife and west-coast days without driving 2 hours each way.
How much does accommodation cost on Kangaroo Island? +
Budget cabins and farm shacks start around $140 a night. Mid-range hotels and lodges sit between $200 and $400. Luxury stays like Southern Ocean Lodge start north of $2,000 a night and climb from there. Discovery Parks cabins and Western KI Caravan Park are the cheapest beds with a roof.
How far in advance should I book? +
For peak summer (December to February), book 4 to 6 months ahead for the best places. Easter and the September school holidays are the next-busiest windows. Outside those, 4 to 6 weeks is usually fine.
Should I split my stay between two bases? +
If you have 5 or more days, yes. Two nights in the east (Penneshaw or Kingscote) and 2 to 3 nights closer to Flinders Chase saves you hours of driving. Under 3 nights, pick one base and accept that you will not see the whole island.
