The three bases to choose from
Almost every stay on the island falls into one of three areas. Pick the one that matches your trip, not the other way round.
Kingscote is the biggest town. Walkable foreshore, the most restaurants, a supermarket, the Aurora Ozone on the headland, and a 45-minute drive to either end of the island. It is the safest bet for first-timers and the easiest base for 3-night trips.
Penneshaw sits on the east coast right next to the ferry terminal. The local dolphin pod cruises past most mornings. Best for short trips where you do not want to drive far on your first or last day, and best for anyone who wants to wake up overlooking the water.
The west end (Western River, Karatta, Vivonne Bay, and the edge of Flinders Chase) is where you stay if wildlife and the south-west coast are the whole point of the trip. Less infrastructure, more kangaroos in the driveway. Expect a grocery run before you arrive.
By budget
Three tiers cover almost everything on the island. Prices below are indicative and move with the season.
- Luxury (from $600 a night and well north of that): Southern Ocean Lodge is the headline. Lifetime Private Retreats, Sea Dragon Lodge premium villas, and a handful of architect-designed shacks make up the rest.
- Mid-range ($200 to $400 a night): Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, Aurora Ozone Hotel, Kangaroo Island Seaside Inn, and a long tail of comfortable B&Bs and self-contained cottages.
- Budget ($100 to $200 a night): Discovery Parks cabins at Emu Bay, Western KI Caravan Park near Flinders Chase, farm-stay shacks on Airbnb, and the Penneshaw YHA for backpackers.
Full picks for each tier sit on the luxury, mid-range and budget pages.
By trip type
If you know the shape of your trip already, jump straight to the matching guide.
- Family-friendly stays with kitchenettes, bunk rooms and short walks to safe swimming.
- Luxury stays for couples and slow trips with a serious food budget.
- Mid-range stays for the comfortable middle that fits most weekly travellers.
- Budget stays for road-trippers, caravanners and people on a long lap of the country.
Splitting your stay
5-plus day trips almost always work better with two bases. Two nights in the east near Kingscote or Penneshaw, then 2 to 3 nights closer to Flinders Chase, cuts a lot of dead driving. You see Seal Bay, the dunes, and the south coast without the 2-hour round trips back to your room every night.
Under 3 nights, pick one base. Moving rooms eats half a day, and you will resent the time more than you saved on the drive.
Booking tips locals share
Peak summer (December to February) sells out the best beds 4 to 6 months out. Easter is the next-fastest weekend to disappear. School holidays in April, July and October fill faster than they used to.
For shoulder season (March to May, September to November), most places have flexible cancellation up to 7 days out. Book early, lock in the rate, and re-check 2 weeks before in case anything drops.
Check what is included. Some lodges fold breakfast and a 4WD wildlife drive into the rate, and the headline price reads expensive until you tally the extras you would have paid for anyway.
