The 2-day rule
Pick a half. East and centre, or west and centre. Trying to fit Flinders Chase, Seal Bay and the food trail across 2 days means 5 hours of driving on day 2 and a sunset you sleep through. Choose one.
The east-and-centre half is the easier 2-day trip. Shorter drives, more wildlife per kilometre, and you do not have to leave Penneshaw at 7 am.
Day 1 — Penneshaw to Stokes Bay
First ferry across (book the earliest crossing for the extra 2 hours on the island). Drop bags in Penneshaw or push straight on to Kingscote.
Lunch in Kingscote (the foreshore cafes or the bakery). Afternoon at Stokes Bay: park, walk through the rock tunnel between the boulders, swim in the sheltered pool. Most of the day-tour buses skip Stokes Bay because the tunnel walk does not work for them, which is exactly why it is on this list.
Back to Penneshaw or Kingscote for dinner. If you have time and energy, stop at Emu Bay on the way for a 30-minute walk on the long beach.
Day 2 — Seal Bay and a food stop
Out the door by 8.30 am. Drive south to Seal Bay, book the 10 am or 11 am guided beach tour the day before. Walk on the sand with the sea lion colony, listen to the ranger, take more photos than you think you need to.
Lunch at Vivonne Bay or pack a picnic. Afternoon at one of the central producers: Island Beehive for honey tasting, KI Spirits for a gin flight, or the KI Oyster Farm at American River if you booked ahead.
Last ferry back from Penneshaw. Aim for the latest evening crossing you can manage so you do not have to cut the day short.
What you are skipping
Flinders Chase (Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, the west coast). Kelly Hill Caves. Hanson Bay koalas. Little Sahara dunes. Most of the north coast.
None of this is a tragedy. The 2-day trip is a tasting plate. You leave knowing whether KI is for you, and you come back for a longer trip if it is.
Booking checklist
- Ferry: first morning crossing out, last evening crossing back. Lock both in the same booking.
- Stay: 1 night in Penneshaw or Kingscote. Self-contained beats hotel if dinner timing matters.
- Seal Bay guided tour: book on the National Parks SA site before you arrive.
- One food experience: oyster farm, distillery or honey farm.
That is the whole list. Everything else is improvisation.
