Plan KI
What to do / 3 days

KI in 3 days, the balanced version.

Three days is the sweet spot. You see the east, the centre and Flinders Chase without doing a HECK of a long day in the car. Here is how to pace it.

How to think about 3 days

Stay in Kingscote. Day 1 is east and central. Day 2 is south coast and food. Day 3 is the long Flinders Chase loop with a Remarkable Rocks sunset on the way back. Drive total for the trip: about 6 hours spread across 3 days.

That is the whole shape. Everything below is the detail.

Day 1 — Penneshaw to Kingscote, slow

Catch the first ferry across. Drive straight to Stokes Bay (60 minutes from Penneshaw). Park, walk the rock tunnel, swim or rock-pool depending on the tide. Lunch in Kingscote on the foreshore.

Afternoon at Emu Bay or American River. Both are short drives from Kingscote and both reward a slow afternoon over a fast tick. Dinner in Kingscote, early night.

Day 2 — Seal Bay and the food trail

Out the door by 8.30 am. Book the 10 am or 11 am Seal Bay guided beach tour. Walk on the sand with the sea lion colony.

Lunch at Vivonne Bay or a picnic somewhere south coast. Afternoon: pick two from the food trail. KI Oyster Farm in American River, Island Beehive for honey, KI Spirits for a gin flight, KI Ligurian Bee Co for the only single-origin Ligurian honey on the planet. Dinner back in Kingscote.

Day 3 — Flinders Chase and sunset

This is the long day. Out by 8 am. Drive west on Playford Highway (1 hour 45 to Flinders Chase). Stop at Hanson Bay Sanctuary first for the koala walk if you booked it.

At Flinders Chase: the new visitor centre, the boardwalk to Admirals Arch (fur seals on the rocks below), then Remarkable Rocks. Time your arrival at Remarkable Rocks for an hour before sunset so the granite catches the light.

Drive back to Kingscote after dark only if you absolutely have to. Better to leave Remarkable Rocks at sunset and be back on sealed road before full dark. Animal strikes are the main risk after sundown.

FAQ

Common questions

Is 3 days enough on Kangaroo Island? +
Yes. Three days (two nights) is the sweet spot for a first trip. You cover the east, the centre and Flinders Chase without running yourself into the ground, and you still leave with a short list of things to come back for.
Should I split my stay or stay in one base? +
Stay in one base. Kingscote is the easiest all-rounder for 3 days. Splitting only saves time on 5-plus night trips.
Can I do Flinders Chase on a day trip from Kingscote? +
Yes, but it is a full day. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes each way, plus 4 hours on the ground. Start at 8.30 am and you will be back for dinner.
What should I book in advance for 3 days? +
Ferry, accommodation, the Seal Bay guided tour, and one food experience (oyster farm, distillery or honey farm). Everything else can be improvised.
