The 5-day shape
Five nights, six ferry-clock days. Book the first morning ferry out and the last evening ferry back, just as you would on a shorter trip. Stay two nights in or near Kingscote for the east and central days, then move west to a Flinders Chase-side stay for three more.
Splitting your base means one mid-trip drive but it saves you four single-day round-trips of 2 hours plus. The maths is worth it.
Day 1 — ferry, settle, north coast
Morning. 9 am ferry from Cape Jervis. Off at Penneshaw 9:50 am. Drive to your Kingscote base, 45 minutes.
Afternoon. Lunch at Emu Bay, swim if the wind is kind. Drive on to Stokes Bay for the hidden swim cove behind the rocks if you fancy a longer day, or stay put and walk the beach.
Evening. Early dinner at the Aurora Ozone bistro. Bed at a sensible hour.
Day 2 — the wildlife loop
Morning. 9 am south to Seal Bay for the 10:30 ranger walk among the Australian sea lion colony.
Lunch. Vivonne Bay general store. Around 12:30 pm.
Afternoon. Little Sahara dunes (the 70 m white-sand dunes, sandboards on hire). Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary koala boardwalk on the drive back if there is time, otherwise save it for the west-base days.
Evening. Dinner at Sunset Food & Wine on the Dudley side. Worth the 45-minute drive east.
Day 3 — move west, slow afternoon
Morning. Pack up. Drive to the Bee Co cellar door in Penneshaw to load up on Ligurian honey (the wholesale boxes are cheaper than the supermarket pots). Lazy breakfast at Cactus before you check out.
Lunch. Pack a picnic. Drive west on the Playford Highway, 1 hour 30 to your Flinders Chase-side stay. Picnic at Vivonne Bay on the way in.
Afternoon. Settle into the west-end stay. Short walk on the local beach (most west-end stays have private access). Sunset at Vivonne Bay or your stay’s deck.
Evening. Cook in at the stay, or drive 20 minutes to the Marron Cafe at Heritage on Hanson Bay. Sleep with the door open and listen to the koalas.
Day 4 — the full Flinders Chase day
Morning. Dawn at Admirals Arch. The fur seals are at their most active in early light and the lookout is yours for an hour before the day-trippers arrive. Back to the stay for breakfast.
Late morning. Flinders Chase visitor centre (the 2024 build is genuinely worth 30 minutes). Cape du Couedic lighthouse stop if you want the full west-end picture.
Lunch. Hanson Bay cafe or back to the stay.
Afternoon. Kelly Hill Caves guided tour (90 minutes including the drive). Easy walk among the limestone formations, kids love it.
Evening. Remarkable Rocks for the late-afternoon golden hour and sunset, then 30-minute drive back to the stay. This is the day people fly home talking about.
Day 5 — west-end slow morning, drive back, ferry home
Morning. Sleep in. Beach walk. Pack up the stay around 10 am. Drive back east on the Playford Highway, 2 hours.
Lunch. Kingscote bakery or the Emu Bay Lavender cafe for a long pause.
Afternoon. Easy drive to Penneshaw via American River. Quick browse of the Dudley wine trail if you have time (Dudley Wines and False Cape are the two to hit on a short stop).
Evening. 6 pm ferry from Penneshaw, Adelaide by 8:30 pm.
