Plan KI
3 days

Kangaroo Island in 3 days, the locals’ way.

The default we send friends to. Three nights, two full days, one base, two big drives, and the right dinner at the end of each. Here is the plan.

The 3-day shape

Three nights, four ferry-clock days. Book the first morning ferry out (around 9 am from Cape Jervis) and the last evening ferry back (around 6 pm from Penneshaw on day four). Pick one base in Kingscote and stop moving. The drives are big enough that adding a second base would cost you a half-day in packing and check-in.

Day 1 is travel, settle and a swim. Day 2 is the wildlife loop (Seal Bay, Hanson Bay koalas, south-coast beaches). Day 3 is the Flinders Chase day. Day 4 is a slow morning and the ferry home.

Day 1 — arrive and settle

Morning. 7 am leave Adelaide, 9 am ferry from Cape Jervis. Off at Penneshaw by 9:50 am. Drive west on the Hog Bay Road to Kingscote, 45 minutes, with a Pelican Lagoon stop.

Afternoon. Bags down at the Kingscote base. Drive 25 minutes north to Emu Bay for a long lunch and a swim. If the north wind is up, swap to Stokes Bay (the hidden swim cove behind the rocks, 25 minutes further on a gravel access).

Evening. Back to Kingscote for an early dinner. The Bay Bistro at the Ozone is the easy pick. Bed by 9:30 pm to be sharp for the big day.

Day 2 — the wildlife day

Morning. 8 am breakfast in Kingscote. 9 am south to Seal Bay (45 minutes). Book the 10:30 am ranger walk: 45 minutes among the Australian sea lion colony, on the beach with them. The wildlife is incredible and all totally accessible. Quick stop at the conservation park lookout after.

Lunch. Vivonne Bay general store. Fresh fish, cold drink, sand on the floor. Around 12:30 pm.

Afternoon. Drive on to Little Sahara (15 minutes from Vivonne) for the dunes. 70 m of white sand walking up, a long fast run back down. Then on to Hanson Bay (30 minutes further west) for the koala boardwalk. The wild koala population here is the densest on the island.

Evening. Back to Kingscote by 6 pm. Dinner at Sunset Food & Wine, on the slope above Penneshaw with the best view on the east end. Worth the 45-minute drive across.

Day 3 — Flinders Chase

Morning. 8 am breakfast. 9 am west on the Playford Highway, the only fully sealed run to the west end. Coffee stop at Parndana. Reach the Flinders Chase visitor centre around 11 am. The new (2024) interpretive centre is worth 30 minutes alone.

Lunch. Flinders Chase cafe at the visitor centre, or pack a picnic for the Remarkable Rocks lookout.

Afternoon. Remarkable Rocks (the wind-sculpted granite domes on the cliff edge, 45 minutes). Drive 10 minutes to Admirals Arch (the cliff-cut sea cave full of New Zealand fur seals, another 45 minutes). If the light is good, stay for the late-afternoon golden hour at Remarkable Rocks. Remarkable Rocks during sunset is when it is most beautiful, but only if your drive back can finish before dark.

Evening. 2-hour drive back to Kingscote. Aim to be back by 7 pm in summer, 5:30 pm in winter. Quick dinner at the Aurora Ozone bistro or takeaway from Bert’s Cafe. Pack for the morning ferry.

Day 4 — slow morning, ferry home

Morning. Sleep in. Breakfast at Cactus in Kingscote. Drive east on the Hog Bay Road toward Penneshaw via American River (the dolphin pod often comes through the inlet between 9 and 11 am). Stop at the Bee Co cellar door for honey to take home.

Lunch. Penneshaw Hotel garden, or fish and chips at the wharf.

Afternoon. 4 pm boarding for the 4:30 or 6 pm ferry. Adelaide by 7 or 8:30 pm.

FAQ

Common questions

Is 3 days the right length for Kangaroo Island? +
For most first-timers, yes. Three nights gives you two full days on the island plus the bookend ferry days. That is enough for the headline wildlife, the wild west coast, a swim beach and a real KI dinner without rushing. It is the length we recommend most often.
Should I split my stay on a 3-day Kangaroo Island trip? +
No. Three nights is the cutoff: pick one base (Kingscote is the safest) and do day-trips. Splitting between Kingscote and Flinders Chase only adds value once you have 4 or more nights and want to skip the daily 2-hour round-trip drives.
What is the must-do on a 3-day KI trip? +
Seal Bay (the ranger-guided walk among the sea lions), Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch at Flinders Chase, and at least one swim beach (Stokes Bay or Pennington Bay). Add the Bee Co cellar door for honey and one nice dinner. That covers the headline list.
How much driving is involved in a 3-day Kangaroo Island trip? +
Around 350 km over the 3 days if you base in Kingscote. Day 1 is light (the ferry and a short drive to your base). Day 2 is the wildlife loop (140 km). Day 3 is the Flinders Chase day (220 km round-trip from Kingscote). Plan to be back at your stay by 5 pm.
