The 7-day shape
Seven nights, eight ferry-clock days. Three bases. Two nights east (Penneshaw or American River), two nights central (Kingscote), three nights west (Flinders Chase-side). Each move is under 90 minutes. Each base earns its time.
The trick is to stop trying to fit. Pick one big thing each day and let everything else happen around it. Most of what people miss on a shorter trip is the unscheduled time.
Day 1 — ferry, east settle
Morning. 9 am ferry. Off at Penneshaw 9:50 am. Walk into town for coffee at the foreshore, then up the hill to your east-end stay.
Afternoon. Settle in. Penneshaw beach walk to spot the dolphin pod if it is around. One of the great things about Penneshaw is seeing the local dolphin pod pass through.
Evening. Dinner at Sunset Food & Wine.
Day 2 — the Dudley Peninsula day
Morning. The Dudley wine trail. Dudley Wines, then False Cape Wines, then a long lunch at one of the cellar-door kitchens.
Afternoon. Drive out to Cape Willoughby lighthouse on the eastern tip. Tour the keeper’s cottage. Walk the cliff loop.
Evening. Penneshaw Hotel garden bar. Early to bed.
Day 3 — move central, north coast
Morning. Pack up. Drive to American River for the Bee Co cellar door and a coffee at Oyster Farm Shop. Honey home, oysters on the deck.
Lunch. Emu Bay Lavender cafe.
Afternoon. Emu Bay swim and walk. The long flat run of white sand is the best stretch on the north coast.
Evening. Dinner at Cactus in Kingscote. Bed at the central base.
Day 4 — Seal Bay and the south coast
Morning. 9 am south to Seal Bay, 10:30 ranger walk. Stop at the Vivonne Bay general store for fish on the way past.
Afternoon. Little Sahara dunes, sandboards if the kids want them. Drive on to Stokes Bay for the hidden swim cove behind the rocks. The little tide-pool inside the rocks is the secret beach KI is known for.
Evening. Back to Kingscote. Pizza at Bert’s and an early night.
Day 5 — move west, slow settle
Morning. Pack up Kingscote. Drive west on the Playford Highway. 1 hour 30 to your west-end stay.
Lunch. Marron Cafe at Heritage on Hanson Bay, the freshwater crayfish is the order.
Afternoon. Hanson Bay koala boardwalk. The wild koala population here is the densest on the island. Time for a slow beach walk on Hanson Bay itself.
Evening. Cook in at the west-end stay. Sunset on the deck.
Day 6 — the full Flinders Chase day
Morning. Dawn at Admirals Arch with no other visitors. Back to the stay for a long breakfast.
Late morning. Flinders Chase visitor centre. Cape du Couedic lighthouse tour. Easy 1-hour walk on the Snake Lagoon trail if the weather is kind.
Lunch. Visitor centre cafe or a picnic at the West Bay parking area.
Afternoon. Kelly Hill Caves guided tour.
Evening. Remarkable Rocks for sunset. Remarkable Rocks during sunset is when it is most beautiful, and on a 7-day trip you can drive back at twilight without rushing.
Day 7 — Cape Borda or a slow morning
Morning. Choose your own. Either drive out to Cape Borda lighthouse for the most remote stop on the island (45 minutes from your stay, a different feel to Cape du Couedic), or sleep in and walk to the beach.
Lunch. The Marron Cafe again, or a long pub lunch at the Parndana Hotel on the drive back east.
Afternoon. Drive back east to your last night near Kingscote or Penneshaw.
Evening. Slow dinner. Pack for the morning ferry.
Day 8 — ferry home
Morning ferry from Penneshaw, Adelaide by lunchtime.
