The smart 2-day shape
Two nights, three days on the island clock. Book the first morning ferry out (around 9 am from Cape Jervis) and the last evening ferry back (around 6 pm from Penneshaw on day three). That gives you a full Day 1 afternoon, a complete Day 2 in the middle, and a relaxed Day 3 morning before you sail home.
Pick one base. Kingscote is the easiest call. Walkable town, the best dinner options, and a 45-minute drive to most of the south-coast highlights. Penneshaw is the alternative if you want the Dudley Peninsula and the dolphin pod as your second-day focus.
Day 1 — arrive, settle, slow start
Morning. 7 am leave Adelaide, 9 am ferry from Cape Jervis. Backstairs Passage crossing, coffee on board, off at Penneshaw by 9:50 am. Drive to your Kingscote base via the Hog Bay Road, 45 minutes, stopping at Pelican Lagoon for the view.
Afternoon. Drop bags at the stay. Drive 25 minutes north to Emu Bay for a long lunch at the Emu Bay Lavender Farm cafe or the Frogs & Roses kiosk, then a swim or beach walk on the 5 km arc of white sand. If the wind is up, swap Emu Bay for Stokes Bay (the swim cove tucked behind the rocks on the north coast, around 25 minutes further).
Evening. Back to Kingscote for dinner. Sunset Food & Wine has the view, the Aurora Ozone bistro the easier menu for tired travellers. Bed by 9:30 pm. You will need the sleep.
Day 2 — the big day
Morning. 8 am breakfast at home or at Cactus in Kingscote. 9 am on the road heading west on the Playford Highway. Quick stop at Parndana lookout, then push on to Hanson Bay (around 1 hour 30 from Kingscote) for the koala walk. The Wildlife Sanctuary boardwalk has the densest wild koala population on the island. Allow 45 minutes.
Lunch. Vivonne Bay general store or the Flinders Chase visitor centre cafe, around 12:30 pm.
Afternoon. Flinders Chase National Park. Remarkable Rocks (the wind-sculpted granite domes on the south coast, 30 to 45 minutes), then Admirals Arch (cliff-edge sea cave with the New Zealand fur seal colony, another 30 to 45 minutes). Time the Seal Bay 2 pm ranger walk on the drive back east if you want to add it (45 minutes among the Australian sea lions). Book the Seal Bay slot the day before, not on the day.
Evening. Back to Kingscote by 6:30 pm. We would not drive at night on the island. Quick shower, dinner at Penneshaw Hotel if you have the energy for the 45-minute eastward drive, or at the Ozone if you do not.
Day 3 — slow morning, ferry home
Morning. Sleep in. Coffee in Kingscote. Drive east toward Penneshaw via American River. If the dolphin pod is around, you will see them off the Penneshaw foreshore between 8 and 11 am. Quick browse of the Bee Co cellar door on the way (Ligurian honey is a KI signature and worth the box of jars home).
Lunch. Penneshaw Hotel garden bar or fish and chips at the wharf, 12:30 pm.
Afternoon. 4 pm boarding for the 4:30 or 6 pm ferry. Back at Cape Jervis by 5:15 or 6:45 pm, Adelaide by 7 or 8:30 pm.
