Stay / Budget

Cheap stays that do not feel cheap.

The ferry is the expensive bit. Once you are across, KI has plenty of beds for $200 a night or less. Here is what is worth booking.

Discovery Parks cabins

Discovery Parks runs sites at Emu Bay and Penneshaw. Cabins sit in the $140 to $200 a night band off-peak and climb in summer. Two-bedroom cabins with a full kitchen are the sweet spot for couples and small families.

Emu Bay puts you on a 4 km stretch of safe-swim beach with kangaroos in the dunes. Penneshaw is a short walk from the ferry, the pub and the local dolphin pod that cruises the bay most mornings.

Western KI Caravan Park

Near the gates of Flinders Chase, this is the budget base for travellers who want to do the west coast properly. Self-contained cabins, powered and unpowered sites, and a kangaroo population that owns the lawn.

Best for road-trippers and anyone doing 2-plus nights at the west end of the island.

National parks camping

National Parks SA runs bush campgrounds at Flinders Chase (Rocky River), Cape Borda, Vivonne Bay and along the Heysen Trail. Book on the National Parks SA site. Fees sit between $15 and $40 a night per site.

Bring everything you need. Drop toilets, no power, limited water at most sites. Total fire bans through summer can close some sites at short notice. Check before you go.

Farm shacks and budget Airbnb

The most KI-feeling budget stays are farm shacks. Old shearers’ quarters, converted dairies, simple cabins on a working property. Most sit between $140 and $200 a night for two adults, with a full kitchen and a paddock view.

Search Airbnb by area and filter for entire places under $200. Stokes Bay, Emu Bay, Cygnet River and the Parndana area all have a decent number of listings.

Penneshaw YHA

The only true backpacker hostel on the island. Dorm beds, twin rooms, shared kitchen, and a 2-minute walk from the ferry terminal. Best for solo travellers, gap-year trips, and anyone happy to share a room.

Booking and packing tips

Self-contained beats hotel rooms for budget travellers on KI. A full kitchen and a fridge are the difference between $40-a-head pub dinners every night and a properly fed trip for $15 a head. The IGA in Penneshaw and the bigger supermarket in Kingscote cover everything you will need.

Fill up with fuel before you head across on the ferry. Fuel on the island is consistently more expensive than on the mainland.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the cheapest place to stay on Kangaroo Island? +
Hostel dorm beds at Penneshaw YHA start under $50 a night. Powered campsites at Discovery Parks Emu Bay and Western KI Caravan Park sit between $40 and $60 a night. Self-contained cabins start around $140.
Can you camp on Kangaroo Island? +
Yes. National Parks SA runs bush campgrounds at Flinders Chase, Cape Borda and Vivonne Bay. Book on the National Parks SA website. There are also private caravan parks with powered sites at Emu Bay, American River, Penneshaw and Karatta.
Are farm stays a good budget option? +
Yes, if you want privacy and do not mind a gravel driveway. Farm shacks listed on Airbnb sit in the $140 to $200 a night band for two adults, and you usually get a full kitchen plus a wildlife show on the lawn at dusk.
How do I keep food costs down? +
Shop the IGA in Penneshaw or the bigger supermarket in Kingscote on arrival. Restaurants on KI are not cheap and many close early. A loaded esky and a self-contained cabin will save you a couple of hundred dollars across a 3-night trip.
