Plan KI
Stay / Mid-range

The comfortable middle, 200 to 400 a night.

This is where most KI trips land. Real beds, proper bathrooms, a restaurant on site or a 10-minute drive away. Here are the stays locals send their friends to.

Aurora Ozone Hotel — Kingscote

The Ozone has been on the Kingscote foreshore for over a hundred years. The Aurora group runs it now and the rooms are properly refurbished. Heated pool, in-house restaurant, the foreshore walk on your doorstep, and a 5-minute drive to the supermarket.

Best for first-timers who want to keep one base for the trip. Family rooms exist and they are genuine family rooms, not a fold-out lounge.

Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge — American River

American River is the quiet middle of the island. Pelicans on the water, a pub across the road, and Mercure’s lodge sits right on the inlet. The rooms are plain, the location is the point.

Best for couples who want water-view evenings and a base that splits the drive to Penneshaw, Kingscote and the south coast roughly in half.

Sea Dragon Lodge — Pennington Bay

Sea Dragon’s standard eco lodges sit in this price band (premium villas climb higher, see the luxury page). Self-contained, breakfast hampers included, and you are 15 minutes from Vivonne Bay, Seal Bay and the start of the south-coast drive.

Best for travellers who want a south-coast base without committing to the luxury spend.

Kangaroo Island Seaside Inn

Across from the Kingscote foreshore, smaller than the Ozone, and usually $50 to $80 a night cheaper. Older fit-out, friendly owners, parking out the front. The kind of place that fills up by word of mouth.

Self-contained cottages and B&Bs

The long tail of mid-range stays on KI is private cottages. Search Airbnb, Stayz and Booking by area: Kingscote, Penneshaw, Emu Bay, American River, Stokes Bay, Vivonne Bay.

Filter for entire homes, washing machine, and at least one queen bed plus a second bedroom. You will land on a shortlist of 20 to 30 places that consistently rate well. Cottages near Stokes Bay and Snelling Beach hold their value better than anything near the ferry.

What to check before you book

Three things separate a good mid-range stay from a disappointment on KI: distance to the nearest restaurant after sunset, water pressure, and the host’s actual response time. Read the most recent 5 to 10 reviews, not the rating average, and you will spot all three.

Pay attention to the words “dirt road” and “steep driveway”. Both are common on KI and both matter more in a hire car than they do at home.

FAQ

Common questions

What does mid-range accommodation cost on Kangaroo Island? +
Plan on $200 to $400 a night for a comfortable double in the off-peak season, climbing to $300 to $500 a night through summer and Easter. Full-service hotels sit at the top of that band, self-contained cottages and B&Bs at the lower end.
Where should I stay in the mid-range tier? +
Aurora Ozone in Kingscote is the safest all-rounder for a first trip. Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge on American River suits couples who want quiet water and a restaurant downstairs. Sea Dragon Lodge near Pennington Bay is the pick if you want a south-coast base.
Are mid-range stays good for families? +
Aurora Ozone has family rooms with proper space and a pool. Self-contained cottages on Airbnb in the same price band usually beat the hotels for families because you get a kitchen, a second bedroom, and somewhere to spread out gear.
How far ahead should I book? +
Mid-range stays move slower than the top end. 8 to 12 weeks out is usually enough outside summer. For the December to February window and Easter, push to 4 months.
