What a KIOA guided quad bike tour actually looks like
Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action (KIOA on second mention) is the longest-running quad bike tour company on Kangaroo Island. Family-run, established in 2007, and based at 188 Jetty Rd, Vivonne Bay. Every tour the team runs is a GUIDED tour. There is no self-drive option, and there is no shared-quad option. Each guest is on their own ATV (All Terrain Vehicle), automatic or manual, and a trained guide leads the group across the property.
The first 30 minutes of every tour is a safety briefing and practice track laps. That time is included in your tour duration. It is the bit that lets first-time riders find their feet, lets confident riders confirm the controls, and lets the guide work out the right pace for the group before heading out. A compulsory risk waiver is signed before you start, via SmartWaiver, and PPE is provided on site.
The guide ratio is 1 to 6. Once a booking goes over 6 guests, a second guide joins the tour. Riders can switch to passenger at any time during the tour, which matters for families with younger or less confident riders. The maximum rider weight is 175 kg, and long pants and covered shoes are compulsory for every guest.
The three KIOA quad bike tours, by name
KIOA runs three named tours. Picking between them is a question of how much time you have, who you are travelling with, and whether you want a kangaroo sighting guaranteed.
- Edge of the Earth (EOE) Quad Bike Tour. 170 minutes. $347 per rider. Ages 10 and over. Departs 10am or 1:30pm. This is the flagship premium tour and the longest of the three. The route covers the rugged coastal terrain at the edge of the property, taking guests down to one of Australia's Top 100 surf beaches, with informative stops the guides set up along the way. Free private upgrade with riders 15 and under.
- All Terrain Adventure (ATA) Quad Bike Tour. 110 minutes. $197 per rider. Ages 6 and over. Departs 9am, 11am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm in summer; 9am, 11am and 1:30pm in winter. This is the recommended family tour and the one most first-time guests take. Free private upgrade with riders 11 and under.
- Sunset Kangaroo Safari (SKS) Tour. 110 minutes. $247 per rider. Ages 6 and over. An after hours tour run on enquiry only. Kangaroo sightings are guaranteed on the SKS tour, and only on the SKS tour. Contact the KIOA office to lock in a date.
The two morning ATA slots (9am and 11am) and the 10am EOE are the calmest, with cooler temperatures and the property at its quietest. The afternoon slots are popular with families coming off a morning at Little Sahara or Seal Bay. If you have a specific tour in mind, the KIOA office is the place to confirm departure times for your travel dates.
What to wear and what is provided
Long pants and covered shoes are compulsory for every guest on every tour. There are no exceptions. Jeans and a closed-toe sneaker or boot are the standard. PPE is provided by KIOA on site. Bring sunglasses, a hat for the practice track and the breaks, and dress in layers because the coastal weather at Vivonne Bay can shift quickly.
The maximum rider weight is 175 kg. Guests close to that limit are welcome and the team will pair you with a suitable ATV during the safety briefing. If you are unsure about the limit or about a specific health condition, contact the office before booking. The risk waiver is compulsory and is signed digitally via SmartWaiver before you start.
Safety, accreditation and the family-run angle
KIOA is the longest-running quad bike tour company on Kangaroo Island, established in 2007. Brenton (a third-generation Islander), Verity and their three boys run it as a family business, and the same family runs Little Sahara Adventure Centre 4 km down the road and Island Beehive in Kingscote. KIOA was voted TripAdvisor's #1 Experience in Australia and #6 Worldwide in 2021, has won South Australian Tourism Gold and Silver awards, and holds Advanced Eco Certification and Climate Action Leader status through EcoTourism Australia. The guides are First Aid and CPR trained with SA Working With Children Checks. Unlike quad biking on farms or other locations, the team operates in a highly controlled environment, prioritising both safety and enjoyment. The tours cater to all experience levels, and safety is the number one priority. In over 17 years of operation, no participant has required more than a Band-Aid or ice pack. Companion Card holders participate free of charge.
Free private upgrades are part of how the team handles families. If you are booking the EOE with a rider 15 or under, the upgrade to a private tour is free. If you are booking the ATA with a rider 11 or under, the upgrade to a private tour is free. That keeps younger riders on their own pace and gives the guide flexibility to slow down at the practice track if a kid needs a few more laps.
Where it is and when to go
KIOA is at 188 Jetty Rd, Vivonne Bay 5223, on the south coast of Kangaroo Island. The office is open daily from 9am to 5pm, closed Christmas Day. From Kingscote it is around 50 minutes by sealed road; from the ferry at Penneshaw it is around an hour and 40 minutes. Vivonne Bay itself is one of the best swimming beaches on the island, and most guests build the morning or afternoon around a swim and the tour.
The natural pairing in a single day is KIOA in the morning, lunch at the Vivonne Bay general store, then Little Sahara in the afternoon for sandboarding. Both sit on the South Coast Road within 12 km of each other. Seal Bay is 25 minutes east and works well as a morning stop if you have booked an afternoon ATA. Gift vouchers are available for tours, which is useful if you are building the day for someone else.
