The adventure shape
Four nights, two bases. Two nights in Kingscote for the dunes and kayak days, two nights west for Flinders Chase walks and the big-coast sessions. Book early ferries both ways and you get a useful first afternoon and last morning on the island.
This plan assumes reasonable fitness, no fear of getting wet, and the willingness to start most days by 8 am. If that is not you, the 5-day plan is the better fit.
Day 1 — ferry, settle, first surf
Morning. 9 am ferry. Off at Penneshaw, drive west to Kingscote, 45 minutes. Bags down at the base.
Afternoon. Drive south to Pennington Bay. Surf hire from the Kingscote board shop on the way. Pennington has reliable beach break, sand bottom, friendly when the swell is small. Stay until the sun drops.
Evening. Burgers at the Kangaroo Island Brewery in Cygnet River. Bed early.
Day 2 — sandboards and kayaks
Morning. 9 am south to Little Sahara. Sandboards and toboggans from the on-site shed. The 70 m white-sand dunes are a workout up and a fast run back down. Quad bikes if you want to push the morning harder. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
Lunch. Vivonne Bay general store, 15 minutes from Little Sahara.
Afternoon. Drive 30 minutes to the Harriet River estuary for a half-day kayak with KI Outdoor Action. Flat-water paddling, mangrove fringes, and a chance of dolphins on the open side. No experience needed.
Evening. Back to Kingscote by 6 pm. Dinner at Cactus, then bed by 9.
Day 3 — move west, big walk
Morning. Pack up Kingscote. Drive west on the Playford Highway, 1 hour 30 to the Flinders Chase area. Drop bags at the west-end stay.
Lunch. Picnic at the Snake Lagoon trailhead inside Flinders Chase National Park.
Afternoon. Snake Lagoon to Rocky River walk (8 km return, 3 hours). The trail tracks the river to the south coast where it pours into the Southern Ocean over a cliff edge. The big-coast view is the reward.
Evening. Dinner at the Marron Cafe at Heritage on Hanson Bay. The freshwater crayfish is the order. Sunset on the deck.
Day 4 — west coast big day, ferry home
Morning. Dawn at Admirals Arch with no other visitors. Back to the stay for breakfast.
Late morning. Platypus Waterholes walk (4.4 km loop, 90 minutes) or Remarkable Rocks plus the Weirs Cove ruins. Pick one, do not race both.
Lunch. Marron Cafe again or pack a roadside picnic.
Afternoon. Drive back east on the Playford Highway. 2 hours to Penneshaw. Quick stop at Pennington Bay if the swell is on for a last surf.
Evening. 6 pm ferry. Adelaide by 8:30 pm.
Recommended stays
Two nights east, two nights west.
- East. Aurora Ozone in Kingscote for the central, or a Vivonne Bay shack if you want to be even closer to the dunes.
- West. Wanderers Retreat near Stokes Bay, Hanson Bay cabins, or Vivonne Bay Lodge.
What to pack for the active version
On top of the normal KI list.
- Walking boots with proper grip. The Snake Lagoon trail has loose rock.
- Quick-dry layers and a thermal top. The Southern Ocean is cold even in February.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a peaked cap. The wind on the dunes will scrub anything looser off.
- A 25 to 30 L day-pack with 2 L of water.
- Recovery snacks. The cafes on the west end are limited.
